Woodchuck Removal and Burrow Control for Your Property

American Bio-Tech Offers Safe & Humane Woodchuck Removal Services

Woodchucks, groundhogs, and whistle pigs are all names for the same animal—Marmota monax—a member of the rodent family, closely related to squirrels. Their fur ranges in color from grizzled brownish-gray to nearly black, and their stocky bodies, short legs, and stubby tails give them a compact, low-to-the-ground appearance.

For gardeners, the mere mention of a woodchuck can spark anything from frustration to outright panic. These fast-moving animals can destroy a well-tended garden in just a few hours, devouring vegetables and flowers during early morning and late afternoon feeding times. Attempting to chase them off usually has little effect—they’re quick to return.

Beyond garden damage, woodchucks are notorious for digging large burrows around homes. These are often found beneath low decks, doorsteps, sheds, or any outbuilding built on a slab. Their burrow entrances are easy to spot: a wide 10–12 inch opening surrounded by a mound of freshly displaced earth.

If you’ve noticed holes around your property or damage to your garden, a woodchuck may be the culprit—and professional removal is often the most effective solution.

The best time of the year to locate these den sites is in early spring, before the new foliage has a chance to conceal them once again. This is also the best time to trap and relocate them as when they emerge from hibernation, they are very hungry and food is at a premium.

Woodchucks in our area breed in March and April and the average litter will be four young, so it’s best to remove them before you’re dealing with a small city of furry creatures.
